Chapter 9

WATCH OUT, I'M A VERY DANGEROUS KOALA BEAR

The writing was literally on the Post-it Note: I needed to find a new job. Pronto. I called up Carla the headhunter and told her I was dusting off my resume.

“Give me whatever you've got, Carla. I need a new job right way.” I couldn't tell her that soon almost every executive assistant at Carleton Corporation would be out of a job, but I wanted to be ahead of the rush.

“That's actually terrific news, Jen,” Carla said. “I just had lunch yesterday with Paula. She's the head of HR at XYZ Media. She's a total pain in the ass, but at least you don't have to work for her, right? She has an amazing opportunity at XYZ.”

“What's the job?” I asked.

“The usual. Executive assistant to the Chairman. He's young though. Like thirty-five. His dad started XYZ and last year handed it over to this guy and his brother. The brother really runs the company. This guy, the Chairman, he's a playboy. He jets around the world and attends parties. He's the 'face' of XYZ. My guess is you'll do a lot of travel booking, house management stuff. Pay's good and the benefits are great, hours are light since he really doesn't 'do' much at the company. They need someone right away. I could get you in tomorrow.”

I didn't even hesitate. “Sounds good. Let me know when it's set up.”

“Do you need some flexibility? Maybe I could see if they have some free time during lunch?”

“Carla, I was let go via Post-it Note. These fuckers are lucky I didn't stomp out the door yesterday. I told them I'd stay here so I can help them transition, and I'll stay as long as they'll pay me—or until I find a new job, whichever comes first. They have no loyalty to me and so I have none to them. I need a job, so I'm going to interview whenever I damn well please. I dare Philip to try and stop me. Set it up and I'll be there.”

“Look at you, ballsy!” Carla said. “Where's the quiet, hardworking Midwestern girl I met a couple of years ago?”

“I think they sent her out to buy more Post-it Notes.”

I went home that night and read everything I could about XYZ Media. Even though the job really didn't entail getting into the nitty-gritty of XYZ, I still wanted to be well versed on what they did so I could speak intelligently during my interview the next day. I found out that the man I would work for was indeed thirty-five and a playboy. He was the stereotypical rich boy who became a big shot because his daddy was a big shot first. He didn't work for a damn thing and he still wasn't working. From what I could tell, being the “face” of the company meant jetting around the world flanked by models or standing on yachts flanked by models. Maybe I'll get to travel, I thought. That would be cool at least.
